Neither snow nor rain nor sleets nor gloom of night could have kept away those party goers last night from the 1199/HaitianBeatz Party at the Sheraton Hotel on Broadway.
Rumors have been spreading for for the past two weeks, that President elect Obama was going to make an appearance at the party last night, when I spoke to Patrick Gaspard (Political Director at The White House) almost 3 weeks ago, he stated that there was a 50/50 chance that he might come. The rumors intensified as it gets closer to the date and tickets really started to get scarced, I had reserved 75 tickets for the HB members and invited guests for the Compas room with Carimi, but the actual numbers of those requested ticket for the HB launch party was close to 125.
Once I arrived at the Sheraton, the first person I spotted was Patrick Gaspard, he was walking around with the President of 1199 George Gresham greeting the incoming guests, we greeted each other spoke for a few minutes and I continued my journey to the Compas room to help Carimi set up. By having Patrick Gaspard there, so early, the rumors really picked up steam, that Obama was probably at the Hotel, especially for some reason or the other, security was beefed up this year compare to previous year.
According to a close source, President elect Obama was scheduled to make a surprised appearance at the party, but it was changed at the last minute to a sattelite appearance live at the Sheraton during the party. Almost all the elected officials in NY dropped by, there are too many to name names
Enough about politics, it was a night for partying, and the 4,000 plus who gathered at the Sheraton did just that. I've just learned one thing last night though, with good music, live entertainment, free food and open bar for over 7 hours, this is a recipe for disaster; by the time the night was over, I had to carry plenty of drunk girls to many waiting cars. For some reason, the men carried themselves well, I don't remember seeing any of them out of control, but for the ladies, I had to pay visits to the dry cleaner and the car wash this morning.
It was a multi-cultural night filled with live performances; from Reggae to soca, from compas to salsa, from oldies to new releases, tout moun te jwenn ye swa. HaitianBeatz.com's hats and t-shirts were given away to the guests.
